“On Wednesday, We Wear Pink!” is a famous quote from one of the best chick flicks of all time – Mean Girls. In short, this epic teen comedy is about a young girl’s struggle to fit in people at a new high school. Lindsay Lohan, the female lead, tries to find acceptance among a clique of girls called the Plastics, who have sartorial rules such as wearing pink clothes on Wednesday.

At university, this happens all the time. It is all about befriending classmates, spending time with your hall mates, being in the in-crowd… It is no different than a high school clique like the Plastics, except that the stakes are higher. In the movie, the color pink is not only the Plastic’s favorite color, but also a symbol of social acceptance. It is not only Lindsay in the movie who seeks for social acceptance, but almost every one of us, including you and me.

Even though there is nothing wrong with fitting in and blending in with your friends and peers, we shall bear in mind that there are times we shall accept ourselves as who we are, not as how people wants us to be.

You could wear your pink tee on Tuesday, your denim sweater on Wednesday, whatever you want on Thursday. Sometimes you just have to be yourself, do what you want to do, and not be afraid to stand out and be different.
