What did you do during your summer break? Did you have a long, relaxing time with friends and family? Or did you work hard in the summer term? I had a good time at home, but soon realised that I would get bored and would not have much to do to keep me busy. I heard about some summer Japanese classes being held nearby and decided to give it a shot. I’d always loved Japanese people and culture, so I was interested in the language as well. My classes are almost finished now, and I’ve come to realize that learning a foreign language is a great idea.
Although I might not need to use the language anytime soon, I feel that it is always good to have some knowledge of a foreign language, which might someday help you out in future, or in your job. Also, my learning experience was enlightening and showed me so much more of the culture, lifestyle, and thinking of Japanese people themselves. After acquiring new language skills, one tends to see and think about day-to-day objects with a different point of view. I also learned about the history of Japan and China, and how the script was passed along through centuries. Most importantly, I felt productive and stimulated throughout my holidays, having to articulate and remember new vocabulary.
The key to learning a new language is interest. So don’t be afraid to take up that language you always wished to be able to speak next time you get the chance. It is a challenge, but with some effort and passion, you can acquire the priceless gift of communication and understanding.
