[Two People Can Only Keep a Secret if One of Them is Dead]
By: Jacobus DU PLESSIS (HSBC Prosperity Hall)
Although we don’t like to admit it we are all a bunch of liars. The only difference is that some lie less and others lie more.
Before the advent of the Internet Age a little white lie would normally go unnoticed and no one would be the wiser. Nowadays, a small little lie can cause a massive amount of problems. As Mark Twain said nearly 200 years ago, “Two people can only keep a secret if one of them is dead”, and if that was perhaps questionable 200 years ago, today it is beyond question.
The great and the terrible thing about the internet is that it records all of our actions and they leave a trail behind.
The biggest illustration how badly dishonesty and the internet can go together was the recent hack of the Ashley Madison website. The Ashley Madison website was a website created for married people who were looking to have extra-marital affairs. Long story short, the hackers broke in and stole all of the registered users’ details and published the details online – likely ruining hundreds of marriages.
The moral of the story is that your granny was right – honesty is the best policy, except now it is even more so.
