What will you record down if a camera is offered to you?
“Camera is a storyteller.” Daniel GROSHONG, a professional photographer from TIME and the founder of Hummingfish Foundation, said. Hall 10 Photography Club had the honour to invite him to share with us about his 30-year photography career at “The World in Pictures” on 10 January.
From the US to Pakistan to Timor-Leste; from Nelson Mandela to Bill Clinton to Lee Teng-hui; from explosion scenes to terrorism attacks to Taliban’s jail; from the land to the sea: he had been to adventures all over the world. He almost never shot a peaceful landscape, but presented a brutal yet true world under the covers of war, blood, bones and desperate faces of children. The photographer behind those lenses took the very risk of facing death. Waiting for three days without rest just to take one perfect shot, asking permission for photograph from terrorists, being threatened in open fire by North Korean soldiers to hand over the film…… He is such a respectful man, and his work? Breathtaking.
Does camera exist to record the world?
“Actually it’s for making changes to the world. A photo sometimes can rock the world.” Although it is certain that sportsmen, business celebrities, politicians, rare creatures and natural scenery can also be found under his camera lens. “I’m currently writing a book about Timor-Leste. I really hope that people will no longer relate only danger and poverty to this country. They have not known the gorgeous nature there.”
“Photography is meaningful yet crazy,” Daniel said, “People would think you are insane if you lie on the street in Mongkok, but they would understand that if you take a camera with you. People wouldn’t view photographers as weirdoes no matter what they do when shooting photos, which I believe can also be considered as a privilege of photographers.”
