Bucking the Trend – the Brain Behind Snapask / 教育界的革新 - Snapask

HSBC Prosperity Hall is delighted to have Mr. Timothy YU, founder of Snapask, as the guest speaker of the first SPECIAL Hall Night Talks in 2017. The sharing took place in Multi-function Hall B on 17 January 2017. The attendance was incredible and filled the venue to overflowing.

Bucking the Trend – the Idea of Snapask

Timothy kicked off the special evening by sharing with us his journey towards a successful entrepreneurship. When he was a Year 2 university student, he set up a small tutoring group for secondary school students. The business expanded quickly. With the support from his friends, they set up a small tutorial centre together. However, after running the centre for 2 years, he realised that it was hard to further scale up the capacity of his business.

“There is a trend in the tutoring industry that many centres attempt to expand their business by opening more classes and replacing live tutors with recorded teaching videos, I wanted to change this trend.” said Timothy.

Timothy went on to explain that the tutoring industry is inefficient as the tutors do not try to understand their students but only focus on spoon-feeding them with exam materials.

To facilitate understanding and efficiency in teaching, Timothy believes that one-on-one teaching is the optimal mode of tutoring. Such belief drove him to think of alternative ways of teaching and learning. For example, he tried to have smaller groups of students every class, instead of a traditional big class with up to 50 persons. However, soon later, he realised that the plan was not feasible. He then turned his head to the possibility of using mobile app to achieve one-on-one teaching-and-learning. This is the skeleton idea of Snapask – a mobile application that is now worthy of HKD$100,000,000.

Today, at the age of 27, Timothy is already the CEO of Snapask Co., a company that have over 150,000 users in Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan, with a market valuation over one hundred million Hong Kong dollars.

Snapask – The “Uberfication” of Education

Snapask is an allocation to match students with tutors online. It allows students to ask questions and receive replies from tutors within a very short period of time, if not immediately. This mode of tutoring takes care of the special needs of each individual students, and offers unique solution to suit that need.

“We are just like Uber, but for education.” said Timothy.

Aside from his idea, Timothy also generously revealed to the audience his secret method of enhancing tutoring efficiency and user experience of Snapask. Timothy and his team made use of computer programmes to collect and analyse the data of students’ learning behaviours. What’s more, they would ask their users questions to proactively test students’ concepts and understandings towards different topics and types of questions, and their answers would also be collected and analysed. All of these functions can be done just by several clicks, using a smartphone.

Despite the great success of Snapask, Timothy’s journey towards success was never all plain sailing. He shared with the audience the not-so-glamorous side of his journey. Before the business was developed into a million-dollar company, Timothy has tested and experimented with different modes in realizing his concepts. For example, he once used a Facebook page as a platform instead of an app. He also set up a website to sell mock papers. Although none of these ideas was adopted in the end, it was these failures that finally built the great success of Snapask.

“You always fail the first time,” Timothy said. “But you should never hesitate to experiment what you believe.” he added.

“Now is always the best time to start.”

Timothy has a clear objective – that is to change something in the current education system. He hated to see students being fed up with standardised materials, and his aim is to provide personalised education to students that is truly helpful to each and individual student.

As a young entrepreneur who first started his business at a timid age, Timothy advised that whoever wants to start their business has to start early – “Now is always the best time to start, start experimenting your assumption and learning how to start the business.”

滙豐業昕堂在本年度舉辦的第一個「業昕之夜」中,榮幸邀得Snapask的創辦人兼行政總裁余佑謙先生(Mr. Timothy YU)分享創業心得。座談會於晚上九時在綜合禮堂B舉行,成功吸引大批宿生參與,場內座無虛席。

教育界的革新-Snapask

余佑謙先向聽眾講述自己在大學時期創業的經歷。他在大學二年級時成立輔導小組,替中學生補習。在累積一定的學生後,他與朋友合資開設小型補習社。其後兩年學生人數穩步上升,高峰期達五六十人之多。可是,當補習社運作達兩年之際,余佑謙在擴充規模時遇上瓶頸。

他解釋:「在補習行業有一個趨勢,許多中心會以播放事先錄製的教學影片取代真人導師教導。雖然此法確實能解決導師人手不足的問題,從而提高生意額。然而就教育而言,這並不是一個好的趨勢。」余佑謙認為在這種趨勢的影響下,補習導師往往只能灌輸學生一式一樣的應試祕笈,而非因材施教。余佑謙始終認為「一對一」是最理想的補習模式,因此他並沒有跟隨「播片」趨勢去擴充其補習社的規模,反而嘗試透過電子應用程式去達至「一對一」教學,這就是Snapask的概念由來。時至今日,Snapask已是一家擁有15萬用戶及估值達1億港元的公司。

Snapask - 教育界的Uber

Snapask為學生在線上配對合適的導師,學生和導師可透過文字、圖片和語音在線上即時交流。這種教學模式能讓導師對症下藥,學生遇上疑難時亦能快速獲得解答。余佑謙形容:「我們就像是教育界的Uber。」

不要害怕失敗

除了分享Snapask的概念外,余佑謙亦分享了Snapask成功的祕訣。他和他的團隊充分利用Snapask作為電子應用程式的優勢,收集有關用戶的學習模式及習慣等數據,再加以分析。此外,他們亦會透過Snapask主動向學生提問,測試學生對不同類型題目的理解,從而為學生提供合適的教導。

雖然他在Snapask取得成功,他也曾在創業時遇到挫折。例如他曾開創一個賣模擬試卷的網頁,卻以失敗告終。這些失敗經驗造就了現在的Snapask。余佑謙表示:「我們未必在第一次嘗試時就成功,但我們必需堅持自己的信念。」

現在是最好的時機

在座談會中,余佑謙展示出一個清晰的目標-對現今的教育模式帶來改變。他不希望學生接受填鴨式教育,所以他致力推廣度身訂造的學習模式,幫助有不同需要的學生。

作為一個在大學時期創業的年輕企業家,余佑謙建議有意創業的學生盡早作出嘗試,因為現在就是最佳的時機去開始、實驗及學習。

HiBuy—The Savior for Residents! / HiBuy—宿生的救星!

“The time is always right to do what is right.” This famous quote by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. fits in Danny HUI’s unique story very much. Let’s read the article below to know more about Danny!

Have you ever heard about “HiBuy”? Well… you must be thinking about the footbridge linked between our Student Residence and Lau Ming Wai Academic Building (AC3), a.k.a. the “HiBye Bridge” dubbed by CityU students. But no! This is not the answer. HiBuy is an online supermarket managed by Danny (Year 4, China Business), an ex-resident of HSBC Prosperity Hall, and several of his friends.

From your experience living in the CityU Student Residence, many of you must have noticed the problem with walking up and down the slope just to reach the nearest supermarket in Festival Walk.  What a nightmare!… Right? In fact, this is exactly the reason why the idea of starting an online supermarket business popped up in Danny’s mind in 2014.

Danny realized many residents found this routine troublesome, but still they must go there to buy necessities such as tissue paper, laundry powder, drinks, cup noodles, etc. day after day, and week after week. So Danny and his friends, who have become his business partners since, collected students’ opinions to make an estimation on the popularity of running a potential online supermarket. They did not only focus on CityU’s residence, but on other university halls such as HKU and HKBU as well. Finally, they decided to carry out the project in the same year.  The new online supermarket was named “HiBuy” after our much-loved “HiBye Bridge” in CityU, aiming at meeting the needs of university students especially those who are living in residence halls.

It is always easier said than done. Starting a business is like riding on a roller coaster. Although Danny’s team did a lot of preparations beforehand, they still faced several key challenges. First of all, since they did not have sufficient I.T. knowledge, it was difficult for them to write a mobile app. Luckily, Dr. Ray CHEUNG, Residence Master of HSBC Prosperity Hall, showed his absolute support to Danny’s team by introducing them to investors and giving them technical advice. With Dr. Cheung’s support and mutual team efforts among the partners, HiBuy’s business took off.

So… how does HiBuy run? This mobile application acts as an online platform to provide a variety of necessities. In this online supermarket, everyone can assess and order whatever they like to purchase as long as they are registered users. The orders would then be delivered to the hall area at a particular time. HiBuy delivers from 6pm to 3am everyday. Prices are reasonable and the services are efficient as well. Do make good use of this incredible app and support your fellow resident entrepreneur!

不知道你有沒有聽過「HiBuy」呢?啊…… 想必你一定是想到了連着宿舍範圍和劉鳴煒學術樓HiBye橋吧。但答案可不是這個呢!HiBuy 是一個新興的網上超級市場,由Danny及他的夥伴所經營,而Danny(中國企業管理四年級)正是我們滙豐業昕堂的舊宿生!

住在城大宿舍的你,肯定經常經歷一個難題在達之路的大斜路爬上爬落,氣急敗壞,只是為了到山下某個最近的超級市場購買日用品,價錢不菲又經常要排長龍,簡直是一星期一次的惡夢! 然而,正正是因為這個經歷,令Danny腦海裏浮現了一個靈感:建立一個網上超級市場。Danny 發覺很多宿生也認同,雖然往來大斜坡去超級市場購物是一件很麻煩的事情,但是沒有日用品的日子確實難過,像紙巾、洗衣粉、飲品或杯麵等,可謂缺一不可。於是在二零一四年,Danny與幾位志同道合的朋友們結成合作夥伴,一起收集了學生對創立網上超級市場的意見,探索此生意的可能性及預算的受歡迎程度。他們不只向城大的學生收集意見,更把範圍擴展到香港大學、浸會大學等。終於,他們決定創立及經營一個網上超級市場品牌,名為「HiBuy」,希望為各大學的學生,尤其是宿生,提供在網上購買日用品的服務。

然而,建立一個事業往往是知易難行,就像乘過山車一樣,總會遇上順境與逆境。到底Danny是如果走過難關的呢?創業初期,他的團隊並沒有充分的電腦技術,要寫出一個手機應用程式,是一件十分困難的事情。幸好滙豐業昕堂舍監張澤松博士提供了十足的支持予這群年青人,他不但提供了寶貴意見,亦介紹了投資者給他們認識,最後Danny及其團隊在共同努力下,成功擴大了HiBuy的事業規模。

到底HiBuy是如何運作呢?作為一個網上平台,這手機應用程式為消費者提供了各式各樣的必需品,只要登記成為用戶,就能夠使用並訂購商品。已訂購的商品將會於特定時間送到宿舍。這個網上超級市場的送貨時間為每天晚上六時至凌晨三時。價錢合理,服務效率高,而且又是我們舊生努力的創業成果,請好好善用這個手機應用程式吧!

The Meaning: Ideas that Can Rock the World / 你怎麼看:可以撼動世界的想法

Mr. Jong LEE, co-curator of TEDxHK and founder of Code Club HK, has given our university students a wonderful and broad-covered speech on the topic of “Ideas That Can Rock the World” at CityU’s SPECIAL Hall Night Talk on a special day, Winter Solstice. Though many students were taking a break for the winter holiday, the atmosphere on the spot was still hot. Mr. LEE took the chance to greet every student and shake hands with them. The talk started with a free conversation.

Mr. LEE broke the phrase “Ideas Can Rock the World” into four terms and explained them one by one with interesting examples and worth-thinking questions. He showed his open-mindedness towards “differences” throughout the sharing.

The first word was “Ideas”. Mr. LEE asked the audience to explain what “ideas” are from a respective viewing point. He didn’t give us an exact definition or judge whose answer is better. By comparing the business attitude between Americans and Indians, he mentioned long-term business cooperation and the manners of doing business: “leaving something on the table or take all”. In such examples, he stimulated us to feel different ideas.

Secondly, “That Can” refers to the percentage of success. Everyone may have different definitions on the percentage of success in consideration of the word “can”. It can be 50 percent, 10 percent or even 1 percent. It was also pointed out that some Chinese students may lack risky spirit because of the traditional education manner.

Then, for the word “Rock”, various synonyms were echoed from the students, such as “change”, “blow up”, “bang”. Simply saying, we should have a thought about the extent of influence that the word “rock” has.

The final terms are “The World”. The viewpoints towards the world are different but the most important thing is that you understand what is happening. He added, “Conclusion is meaningless if you don’t understand what happens.”

Later he shared his thought with us about a broad coverage of questions, from phone purchase to software worker employment and so on. The topics he covered in the speech were diversified and interesting. However, the most impressive thing was that he didn’t dominate the thought about current problems but encouraged us to think and form our own opinions. As Dr. Ray CHEUNG, Residence Master of HSBC Prosperity Hall, concluded at the end, “University students are supposed to possess a world view.” There was no doubt that Mr. LEE possessed so many excellent identities at the same time: science scholar, lawyer, speechmaker and so on.

TEDxHK協辦人兼香港Code Club創始人 Jong LEE先生在城大業昕之夜給學生展開了一次精彩且覆蓋面廣泛的演講。這天正好是中國傳統節日中的冬至。雖然正值寒假, 但這絲毫沒有影響現場的熱烈氣氛。講者一邊與學生握手,一邊聊天─演講就在這輕鬆的交談中開始啦!

講者將「可以撼動世界的想法」分成四個詞語並逐一解釋。講者十分開明,對字義上不同的解釋保持開放態度,在整個演講中多次流露。

第一個詞是「想法」。講者詢問不同學生對這個詞的理解。此後,他並沒有為這個詞下一個具體的定義,也沒有評價孰是孰非,只是給我們一些例子,讓我們感受到不同的想法。他比較了美國和印度商人在生意場上的一些做法,解釋了做生意的方式和長久生意合作的一些關係。他形象地稱生意人對利益的追逐為「留一些東西在桌上」和「拿走桌上所有的東西」,這兩種不同的做法只是因為不同文化使不同地方的生意人對「此次索取多少利益」有不同看法。

第二個詞是「可以」。他又提了個問題:多大的可能性能稱之為「可以」?他肯定不同人會有不同的看法,並說「成功的可能性可以為百分之五十、百分之十或者是百分之一」。同時,他又指出,中國學生受傳統教育所規限,相對缺少冒險精神。

下一個詞是「撼動」。學生們用不同的次來描繪印象中的這個詞,有「改變」、「推翻」、「顛覆」等等。簡而言之,講者希望我們對這個問題有自己的答案:怎樣程度的影響能稱作「撼動」。

最後一個詞是「世界」。又一次,他提到不同人眼中的世界。講者指出,對世界可以有不同的看法,「世界」可以是生活的城市、國家,抑或整個地球村,但你必須明白「世界」正在發生什麼。在多數人眼中,結論在一定程度上可以看作行為的教條,但他說:「如果你不知道發生著什麼,結論沒有任何意義。」

之後,講者同我們分享了他對其他問題的看法,從購買手機到軟件人才的雇用等方面。他提及這些問題的方式也很有趣,但印象最為深刻的是他對學生思考現存問題的提倡。整個演講就是激發我們思考一個又一個的問題的過程。正如滙豐業昕堂舍監張澤松博士於講座尾聲指出:「大學生應具備世界視野。」難怪LEE先生同時能擁有多重身份了:科技人,律師,演講家。

Through the Looking Glass: Monisha SHCHERBAKOVA and Fitting In / 鏡中人: Monisha SHCHERBAKOVA

With a pile of books in one hand and a circuit board in another (definitely an engineering student) Monisha SHCHERBAKOVA (HSBC Prosperity Hall) makes her way through the bustling crowd. She greets me with a radiant smile and her calming presence is infectious.

To give a little background, Monisha’s father is from India and her mother from Russia. She was born and raised in India, moving within the country a few times and speaking Russian at home with her parents. Currently in the second year of her degree, Monisha majors in Computer and Data Engineering. After she completes her bachelor’s degree, she intends to go to Australia for her postgraduate degree.

With such a mixed background, I cannot help but ask her why she chose to come to Hong Kong. She answers that she wanted to live in a cosmopolitan city that was bursting with an international lifestyle. During her search for universities in places like Hong Kong and Singapore, City University of Hong Kong popped up and she was immediately intrigued. The degree she wanted was provided; there were opportunities for international students like scholarships and exchange programs, as well as an on campus residence. Monisha knew CityU could give her a chance to live in a city with so many people coming from different backgrounds – a place where she felt like she could belong.

This need of belonging stems from her time back home in India, “In the inside, I felt Indian but on the outside, I don’t look like one, so most people did not receive me as one,” she says. For a long time, she thought she was the problem. Identity is partially defined by the people you are with. But her attempts at pleasing others to “naturally fit in” were not always successful, making it hard to socialize and form a solid group of friends. However, since attending CityU, she has realised it is not about fitting in, rather its about finding the right people who bring out the best in you. Ultimately, there will never be a reason to change yourself. Also, since CityU is overflowing with people from diverse upbringings, there should be no pressure to only hang out with people who come from the same physical place as you.

As a result, Monisha has made some life-changing friendships, even though she has only been in Hong Kong for a year and a half. Every person she has met has changed her perspective on the world and she still continues to grow and learn from the people around her.

This one individual displays how every person, no matter who you are or where you are from, has goals and dreams they want to achieve. I hope this first “Through the Looking Glass” feature is an inspiration for our fellow residents and can be the kick-start to a relatable and encouraging series that shall serve as a reminder that even though you may feel alone in pursuing your aspirations, you can always find support and motivation from the diverse range of CityU residents.

一手抱著幾本書,一手拿著電路板(毫無疑問是工程學學生),住在滙豐業昕堂的Monisha SHCHERBAKOVA穿過喧鬧的人群。她對我露出燦爛的微笑,讓我也感到愉悅起來。

Monisha的爸爸是印度人,媽媽是俄羅斯人。她從小在印度長大,在國內搬過幾次家,在家和父母都說俄語。她現在就讀二年級,專攻電子計算機及數據工程學。在她取得學士學位之後,她打算去澳洲繼續進修。

她有著如此複雜的背景,所以我情不自禁問她為何選擇來香港。她回答說她想生活在一個東西文化薈萃的世界大都會。當初她在篩選一些位於香港、新加坡等地的大學的時候,香港城市大學就這麼抓住了她的眼球。她想修讀的科目能在這裡找到;這裡為國際學生提供了交換和獎學金的機會,也提供了住宿。Monisha了解到城大能賦予她和來自不同文化背景的人一起生活的機會--一個讓她有歸屬感的地方。

這種對歸屬感的需求源於她在印度的生活經歷。「在印度,我自我感覺是印度人,可是從外表上看,我並不像,所以大多數人並不接受我是他們的一員,」她說。很長一段時間,她都認為自己是問題的癥結所在,苦惱非常。自我認同感很多時需要身邊人來定義,但由於她的混血背景,Monisha 自小便很難「自然融入」任何社交圈子,使得收獲堅固的友誼變得困難。 然而,自從來到城大之後,她就意識到了真正重要的不是努力融入,而是找到能讓你成為更好的人。歸根究底,人本來就不應勉強改變自己來奉承他人。正因為城大四處都是背景不一的人,她不再局限於與同鄉來往。

因此,儘管她才來這裡一年半而已,Monisha已收獲了不少改變她一生的友誼。她碰到的每一個人都在改變她看待世界的方式,她也一直在不斷向身邊的人學習,不斷成長。

SPECIAL Hall Night Talk: Start Your Marvelous Journey of Coding / 業昕之夜:開啟你的奇幻編程之旅

The SPECIAL Hall Night Talk co-organized by HSBC Prosperity Hall and SRO was held in Multi-function Hall C at 9PM, October 5. Miss Michelle SUN, founder of First Code Academy and Mr. LAU Ming-wai, JP, President of Chinese Estates Holdings Limited, were invited to the Student Residence to discuss whether all university students should learn coding.

Before the presentation of honored guests, I interviewed some students randomly about their opinions on coding and programming.

“Coding is obviously useful, as computers are so commonly used in our modern society and nearly all career paths involve the use of computer. If we can design apps by coding ourselves, we can work with higher efficiency.”

“I do think that everyone should learn programming. Programming is not just about coding, but about cultivating a new way of thinking in yourself. We can break a problem into small parts and solve each of them step by step. Programming doesn’t require talent. All you need to do is to start with the basics.”

Dressed in a smart and professional attire, Mr. Lau started the evening by sharing his personal experiences. He had no background of computer until he acquired programming skills from his friend. He reckoned that people did not realize programming was more an approach to solving problems than mere coding.

Miss Sun then stepped onto the stage next. Originally an investment research analyst in Goldman Sachs Bank, she was determined to focus in the technology field when she founded First Code Academy in 2009 to offer coding lessons for children age 6 and up. She graced the night with her signature smile as she introduced the prospects of a technology career and the significance of programming. She emphasized that coding was a key to new markets, especially in Hong Kong. In terms of whether common university students should all learn coding, she said, “Coding is not a career path for everyone. It is more like a paintbrush that turns your idea into reality. What coding teaches you is to solve a problem instead of brushing it aside. We can never spell out a perfect code–which is similar to life.”

Coding is not only a life skill, but a piece of marvelous tool to influence our personalities and lives. So, are you ready to start this amazing journey to coding now or not?

10月5日晚九點,綜合禮堂C。滙豐業昕堂和學生宿舍處邀請了First Code Academy創辦人辛婥琳小姐和華人置業集團主席劉鳴煒太平紳士兩位重量級嘉賓來舉行「業昕之夜」,與大家討論大學生是否都應該學習編程。

在嘉賓演講開始前,小編隨機採訪了一些進入會場的同學,他們對編程和學習編程的看法。

「編程當然是很有用的,現在電腦這麼普及,無論做什麼工作都需要用到電腦,懂得編程可以自己製作一些便捷的小軟件,方便工作或者提高效率。」

「編程可能會提高你的計算能力吧,當然有興趣還是很重要的。我更加期待演講者分享一些創業經歷或者工作經驗。」

「我認為每個人都該學習編程,它的意義絕不僅限於寫代碼,它會培養你的思維方式,解決問題的時候把它分成小部分逐步解決,編程不要求天分的,從基礎的慢慢學就好。」

劉鳴煒先生首先分享他的個人經歷。他西裝革履上台,專業又紳士。他本人沒有電腦的知識背景,編程知識是朋友教給他的。他說,大家對編程的認識是局限的,認為只是寫電腦程序,其實它更是一種解決問題的手段。

辛婥琳小姐隨後上台。她本是美國高盛投資銀行的投資顧問,2009年辭職創業,致力於科技領域,創立First Code Academy,為六歲以上的孩子開設編程課程。她面帶笑容,親和力很強。她介紹了科技領域的前景以及編程的重要作用,尤其在香港,編程是打開新市場的一把鑰匙。而對於普通的大學生是否都應該學習編程,她說:「不是每個人都以編程作為職業規劃的,但它像一支畫筆,可以將想法變為現實。編程可以讓你在問題出現的時候想法子去解決它,而不是迴避它。寫出的程序永遠都不是完美的,人生不也正是這樣嗎?」

編程不僅是一項傍身的技能,更是能不經意中影響你的性格與生活的神奇武器。那麼,要不要從現在開啟這段奇妙之旅呢?

“Don’t start a company for the sake of starting one. “

The first Prosperians’ Talk organized by HSBC Prosperity Hall (Hall 2) this academic year has attracted more than 50 students from all across the globe gathering at Multi-functional Hall B on 6 September. The special talk, “Go Fun Yourself”, was given by Mr. Ray CHAN, CEO/co-founder of 9GAG, to share his world-leading startup journey. The venue was fully packed as the clock struck 9PM.

The guest speaker has already graduated from university for over a decade. He didn’t put on airs or spare anything; instead, he created a casual and welcoming atmosphere. Students were very eager and curious to speak up. The talk was more like a Q&A session. Students raised questions after questions. He reminded us not to leak what he said out of the hall jokingly. So let me unveil his secrets of business here.

Many startup firms were established over the years but most of them failed. Why? Ray has his own interpretation. “Don’t start a company for the sake of starting one. We should always set a goal to solve problems and create value–remember, value doesn’t always equal the dollar sign.” He advised.

How did he end up launching his tech-hub then? Like all of us, when Ray was bored, he googled for “funny pictures”. Ironically, the results were not always funny. Then an idea popped up. He wanted a change. In fact, he made a big change himself: he quit his stable job and moved out of his comfort zone to bring laughter to the world.

You may wonder if his employees would laugh all day long in such a fun working culture and environment. “Actually, not all of our team members have a sense of humour, including myself,” he confessed, “Though we are open and willing to appreciate funny stuff.”

Since 2008, 9GAG has grown into a popular social media platform with nearly 70 million viewers per month. Still, Ray’s team stays humble all the time. “The worst is yet to come, we often tell ourselves.” They keep experimenting to maintain the momentum. Failed projects are valued as precious lessons. “It is not only about the number of success we reached, but we count the magnitude of success also,” he stressed.

Thanks to enormous efforts from Residence Master, Dr. Ray CHEUNG, and his Residence Tutors, the talk was a great learning experience to all participants. “Gaining a deep insight into behind-the-scene stories of kick-starting a company in the  fast-evolving innovation industry boosts my confidence on developing my own ideas.” said Leah MURPHY, a programming savvy exchange student from Hall 2.

“不要為開公司而開,要為解決問題、創造價值而做。”

滙豐業昕堂在本年度舉辦的第一次「業昕之路」於九月六日順利進行,吸引逾50位來自世界各地的同學。座談會邀得9GAG的行政總裁兼共同創辦人陳展程(Ray)分享有關創業的個人心得。活動於晚上九點開始,場內已座無虛席。

Ray 離開大學已超過十年,但為人沒有架子,願意毫不保留地分享個人經驗,甚至一些囧事。他營造出輕鬆開放的氣氛,同學都十分踴躍發言。講座像是問答環節,同學的問題一個接一個。Ray 開玩笑地叫我們別把他的話流出,就讓我在這裡為大家揭秘吧!

近年,愈來愈多新興公司擴展,但更多的半途而廢了。Ray 語重心長地忠告我們:「不要為開公司而開,要為解決問題、創造價值而做。當然價值不是金錢那種價值了。」

那麼他怎樣開創他的公司呢?無聊的時候,你或會搜尋「搞笑圖片」解愁。諷刺的是,搜出來的圖片一點都不好笑。靈光一觸,他想要改變;實際上,他作了個很大的改變。辭了穩定的工作,跳出安逸的框框,就為了將歡笑帶給全世界。

你或會好奇他們在娛樂行業工作,整天一定在笑個不停。「坦白說,我們團隊其實不是人人都很幽默,我就是其中一個例子,」他直認:「但我們會鼓勵及欣賞有趣的創作。」

自2008年至今,9GAG經已成為風靡全球的熱門社交平台,每月瀏覽人數達7千萬。然而,他們仍一直虛心不懈,不斷嘗試新主意,當初的熱誠燃燒不熄。謹記失敗乃成功之母,看重從中學習的得著。Ray強調:「我們常常勉勵自己『反正最糟的還未遇到。』我們不只著眼在成功有幾次,而在成功有多大。」

多得舍監張澤松博士與一眾舍堂導師一番心力,講座反應熱烈。來自業昕堂的交流生Leah Murphy 是一名程序開發發燒友,她雀躍地說:「創意產業日新月異,我認識到創業背後的故事,使我更有自信,勇於構思自己的想法。」下一次分享會將於十月五日舉行,講者將為First Code Academy 創辦人Michelle SUN小姐及華人置業集團主席劉鳴煒先生。屆時記得報名,發掘自己的潛能和興趣!
