The New Cardio: Hakka Kung Fu / 全新有氧運動:客家功夫


Many of us have watched in anticipation the last match between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. We glue our eyes to the television, with one hand in our popcorn bucket, to watch the Fight of the Century. However, have we ever stepped back from the world of violent boxing and maybe think of something more… eastern? Our knowledge about martial arts is very limited to the number of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan movies we watch during our childhood days and that too, we are more focused on the perfectly choreographed moves and sound effects. Today, we explore the world of Hakka Kung Fu, one of the most distinctive and important martial arts systems in South China.

The Hakka clan first emerged out of the “misty mountains” where Fujian and Guangdong joined, during China’s chaotic period in the early Qing. The Hakka martial arts developed along with the development of Hakka as a clan. When the Hakka masters moved from villages to cities, Hakka kung fu also developed into being more ‘modern’.

Held every Monday at 8 pm in March, you could simply walk to the Skygarden to learn this form of Kung fu. It was open for every level and everyone was learning together, so don’t worry about being an awkward small potato. Listening to the grunts of the other participants, I was intrigued to try out this new martial art as well.

It was honestly quite the experience! Master WONG was particularly meticulous about our stance, and we had to hold in a half squat position for at least 5 minutes. Way to work on those glutes! The air punches proved to be a good stress reliever as well. With the wind blowing in my face, it felt more like a refreshment instead of a workout.

Yoga for Health / 健康瑜伽齊齊練


Spending your Sunday evening doing yoga sounds rather relaxing, doesn’t it? Well, wait until you’ve actually tried it and the word “relaxing” will find a new meaning. But before the relaxing bit comes an hour-long battle between your mind and your body: a battle the art of yoga trains your mind to win!

Sitting through this one class, I felt the urge to join the fun. There was something very calm about this particular brand of fun; perhaps it was Master Yogaraj CP’s music or the steady breathing all those practising were careful to maintain. Towards the end of the class, despite not being a participant, I felt like I had been through all the stretches or aasanaas and I was eagerly awaiting the Master’s famous 15-minute cool-down session. Despite its brevity, this 15-minute session puts one in a therapeutic, meditative state instantly and when the Master finally rings a bell as reminder that class has ended, one feels rejuvenated and at peace, as opposed to exhausted and restless.

There were students of various fitness levels who joined the class-some of them were practising Yoga for the very first time, in fact. John DUMAS from France, for instance, is a Year 5 Computer Science student who resides in Lee Shau Kee Hall (Hall 6). When asked about his experience as a first-timer, he says, “I feel more flexible, despite a few pains sometimes. This is a very interesting experience and I quite like it. Especially at the end of the class, I feel very good!”

Another first-time practitioner, Taya CHENG of Jockey Club Academy Hall (Hall 4), studying Information Management in her 4th Year, said, “I find my flexibility improving every class, and outside of the yoga class, the quality of my sleep has improved- I sleep better after doing yoga and for even a few days following that.”

We also have among us a few seasoned yogis who have been practising Yoga with our Yoga Guru-in-Residence since many semesters. Jack YEUNG (Jockey Club Academy Hall, Year 3, Construction Engineering & Management) joined this class some time last year as it supplements his other sport activities. He also attended CityU Yoga Day two years in a row and loved them both. Through his one year of yoga practice, Jack said he has observed a few changes, “I think I’m a lot more relaxed, overall. I’m also more focused- my grades have improved. Besides studying hard, yoga really helps in that respect.” Jack would recommend this class to other residents, he says, because he believes it is a very refreshing experience.

Ellen DING (Alumni Civility Hall, Year 2, Global Business Systems Management) is another one of our own seasoned yogis. Ellen said her flexibility has increased while her muscle tension has decreased over the last year of practising yoga in the Student Residence. She said, “What’s different about this class is that it is more spiritual. Master Yogaraj brings an Indian style to class and it’s more than yoga-it is also meditation. The very best thing about it is doing it on Sunday evenings!”

Having witnessed the class and spoken to its participants, I can say that Student Residence’s brand of Healthy Yoga is truly one to experience. Our residents surely bear testimony to that!

悠閒的星期天傍著斜陽練瑜伽聽起來相當輕鬆吧?但當你真正練過,便知道瑜伽的 「輕鬆」似乎要重新定義了。在放鬆之前,你的心神和身體得進行一場為時一小時的交戰:瑜伽這門學問將會鍛練你的心神成為赢家!

我只上了這麼一堂課,已經受箇中樂趣深深吸引。在空氣裡可以嗅到一種盡在不言中的寧靜,或是來自Yogaraj CP大師的音樂,或是來自通過用心練習而保持的平穩呼吸。雖然我不是參與者,但完堂後我感覺身體好像也有跟他們一同做了伸展瑜伽。我急切地等待大師做完收操運動。雖然收操只有15分鐘,但瞬即帶人進入治癒、冥想的狀態。最後,大師響起一聲鈴聲,以示課堂結束。無一不感到內心平安、煥然一新,疲憊不安一一盡散。

無論有沒有健身習慣的同學均樂在其中,有些還是第一次練瑜伽呢! 李兆基堂的John DUMAS是大五的法國交流生,主修電腦科學。第一次嘗試瑜伽的他這樣形容:「我覺得身體變得靈活了,縱使有時候會有點痛。但我挺喜歡這個有趣的體驗。特別是完堂後,整個人很舒服!」

另一位初學者是來自賽馬會群智堂的Taya CHENG,她正在修讀資訊管理的第四個年頭。她發現:「每堂我的筋骨都變得愈來愈柔軟,睡眠質量大大改善。做瑜伽的那天,甚至往後幾天,我都會睡得特別沉穩。」

Alcohol, Devil or Angel? / 酒精:惡魔還是天使?


Just imagine this scene: you are lying in bed with a bottle of Vodka in hand, looking out of the window at the night sky. Maybe there are even more empty beer cans around. Isn’t this a classical scene in films when a character falls into the lowest point of his/her life? Well, bottles are never a useful treatment for your stress. All it can do is merely providing you with a brief escape from the dark side of your life. What else can you get after all the unconsciousness and false comfort?

I know clearly that university life can be full of stress. A failure of an important exam or interview, a broken relationship, financial burdens or some emotional problems you are afraid to expose to others… these can all become triggers of alcohol abuse. But look around, what else do you have? Don’t forget that you still have people backing you up. Give a call to your parents or old friends, to those who are there for you all the time; put on your sportswear and go for a run at night, letting the stress evaporate with your sweat; visit the SDS Counselling Service to receive help on dealing with your emotional problems, as pouring negative emotions out is the best way to alleviate your stress.

A bit of social drinking may be relaxing and comforting. However, you cannot pretend that everything is fine with bottles of wine. Sometimes it gets worse. Alcohol abuse will bring you even more emotional turmoils, let alone physical harm. As drinking is a personal choice, just bear in mind the following tips for safe drinking:

  1. Eat something before and while you drink.
  2. Don’t drink too fast.
  3. Think before you combine anything.
  4. Try to avoid drinking games.

CityU Yoga Day: Embracing Peace & Harmony / 放鬆心情,淨化身心:城大瑜伽日紀實


On the 6th of November, more than 250 students and staff joined together to celebrate the CityU Yoga Day, since the previous year one had been such a total success and a hit amongst students. What better way to commemorate the end of midterms than a day of yoga?


Mr. Puneet AGRAWAL (Consul-General of India to Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR), Dr. David CHENG (Associate Vice-President, Global Services), Master Yogaraj C.P (YogaGuru-in-Residence and Founder and Director of Prana Yogam), Miss Ann Ho (Associate, Kishinchand Chellaram Foundation) and a few other officiating guests kicked off the event by conducting a Jal-anjali, a ritual that symbolizes the cleansing and purification of the earth.

After an opening speech by Mr. Agrawal followed by a vote of thanks by Dr. David CHENG, Master Yogaraj amazed us all by his yoga art, which he demonstrated with his performance partner, Ms. Coffee LAM. Master Yogaraj is a Guinness record holder, so his performance  left us breathless and constantly fascinated in awe. It was a performance of many shapes: yoga poses that require flexibility and strength that one can master only through sweat, effort and time.


The mass yoga practice started shortly afterwards and the team of Prana Yogam instructors spread around the area to help students perfect their poses. It was a very relaxing session as the wind blew softly on our faces and the relaxing voice of Master Yogaraj released any leftover tension in our bodies. For me personally, the best part was when he told us to lie on our backs and close our eyes. I could hear the birds chirping and the leaves rustling. It was the best remedy to de-stress.



The event, once again, was a huge success. A few residents were asked to describe their experiences:

“It was a short session but I felt healthier after doing yoga. The free energy drink kept me hydrated the whole time too! It felt nice to have a day off to practice yoga and not think about the upcoming deadlines.”

“The whole event was marvelous. The Kishinchand Chellaram Foundation and Cultural and Sports Committee of CityU gave great support and sponsored the yoga mats for the participants. We are also thankful to Mr. Yogaraj and his team of coaches for coming to help and facilitate the whole event. This year’s event was definitely better than the last because every student got goody bags as well! Everything was well organized.”

印度駐香港特別行政區和澳門特別行政區總領事Puneet Agrawal 先生、協理副校長(環球事務)程星博士、瑜伽大師兼Prana Yogam創始人Yogaraj C.P 老師、Kishinchand Chellaram Foundation代表Ann Ho女士以及其他幾位嘉賓一起主持一個名為「Jal-anjali」的開幕儀式,象徵潔淨地球,滋潤大地,為活動正式拉開帷幕。

Agrawal 先生首先進行開幕演講,而後程星博士公開致謝,緊接著由Yogaraj 老師與他的搭檔林芊妤老師進行驚艷全場的瑜伽表演。Yogaraj 老師是世界健力士世界紀錄保持者,曾連續40小時做瑜伽。他的表演使大家著迷而又敬畏。瑜伽表演中的動作對身體柔韌性和力量要求很高,這些只有通過經年的不懈努力才能做到。

接下來是大規模瑜伽練習,Prana Yogam 的導師們走到場地各處糾正學生的姿勢。微風輕拂臉頰,大家都很放鬆,Yogaraj 老師輕柔的聲音使大家將體內的壓力都釋放出去。小編個人覺得最愜意的部分就是閉眼平躺了,聽著鳥兒鳴叫和樹葉的沙沙聲,是消除壓力最好的方式。



「雖然只是短短一小時,但做完瑜伽后覺得自己更健康了。主辦方提供的能量飲料幫助我補充了不少水分!將繁忙的生活放下,通過練習瑜伽來休息, 感覺很不錯。」
