VIVO in RIO

By: Julianne DIONISIO (Lee Shau Kee Hall)

Rio de Janeiro, a city that lies in the midst of protruding headlands and beaches of Brazil. Its streets, a marriage between modern and Portuguese colonial architecture, sprout beside the lush green forests and sparkling waters of South Atlantic Ocean.

Rio is the first south American city where the Olympics will be held; and third in the southern hemisphere. Besides knowing that the name of the city literally means River of January, what else comes to your mind when it’s mentioned?

  1. GOLDEN STRETCHES OF SAND

Copacabana and Ipanema (Girl from Ipanema); yes, they are song titles made famous by iconic artists but they are also names of golden beaches in Rio De Janeiro. There’s definitely something in the water over there making it the top destination for the rich and famous.

  1. SAMBA, DANCING and CARNIVALS

Unretired percussion and rhythm of Samba is considered a religion; the vibrant noise and festive beats entice both locals and visitors to dancing. Parades, floats and elaborate costumes; these are elements of festivities in Rio brought together by their music. Rio’s version of Samba however has evolved into a more eccentric vibe named Bossa Nova.

  1. FOOTBALL

In Rio, football is a common scene on the streets; Young men and children sun-soaked out on the beach showing their expertise with the ball. Fans are in full devotion to their teams – locals are assigned their team from birth!

  1. CHRIST THE REDEEMER

The first picture that will likely come up on google images when you search for Rio will probably feature a massive granite statue of Jesus Christ. Besides attracting tourists, it apparently attracts a lot of lighting and thunder.

  1. PASSIONATE PEOPLE

When you have a well-cultivated culture, it’s hard not to be patriotic to your home.  Citizens of Rio De Janeiro are known to take pride in their identity and diversity – their melting pot of races is well-celebrated evident through their traditions.
